On Thursday, the European Union announced sanctions for human rights violations in a number of countries, including Russia and Ukraine. In particular, the decision refers to sanctions against those in Russia who are related to “politically motivated” decisions against well-known critics of the Kremlin – such as Alexey Navalny and Vladimir Kara-Murza.
In general, as far as Russia is concerned, the EU imposes restrictions on 12 individuals and 5 legal entities. In addition to measures against those who persecute critics of the Russian authorities, the Brussels decision refers to sanctions for the illegal use of facial recognition technology and “arbitrary arrests.” The “black list” of the EU included, among others, FSIN director Arkady Gostev, Dmitry Nozhkin – head of the Vladimir Correctional Colony No. 6, where Alexei Navalny is held, and three of Nozhkin’s deputies. Measures have also been introduced in relation to the Main Department of Internal Affairs in Moscow.
The publication “Meduza” drew attention to the sanctions against the FSB officer Alexander Samofal, who is believed to be involved in the poisoning of the politician Vladimir Kara-Murza.
The EU sanctions announced on Thursday are also related to persons whom the European leadership suspects of human rights violations in Afghanistan, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.
