The “Maniac of Angar” was given 10 years for the murder of three more women

The court in Irkutsk sentenced Mikhail Popkov, known as the “Hangar maniac”, to 10 years in prison and found him guilty of the murder of three more women. This is reported by the regional prosecutor’s office. For Popkov, this is the fourth sentence, including two life sentences.
According to the prosecutor’s office, in October 1997 and March 1998, he strangled two women, 25 and 25 years old, on the bank of Angara. He burned the body of one of them, doused it with gasoline. In October 2003, he stabbed a 31-year-old woman at least 40 times in the area of the Novo-Leninsky cemetery in Angarsk. He found victims on the streets of the Novo-Lenino microdistrict in Irkutsk, including at bus stops, offering to give them a ride in his car. Popkov took women to deserted places where he killed them.
- Mikhail Popkov is serving a life sentence for the murder of more than 80 women. He committed crimes from 1992 to 2010 in the Irkutsk region. Until 1998, he served in the internal affairs bodies. He was detained in 2012 in Vladivostok.
- In 2015, Popkov was found guilty of the murders of 22 women and sentenced to life imprisonment. On December 10, 2018, the court of the Irkutsk Region found him guilty of another 59 murders and sentenced him to a second life term.
- Earlier, Popkov also confessed to two murders after receiving two life sentences. For these crimes, he was additionally sentenced to 9.8 years in a penal colony.
- In an interview with Sibir.Realii, the investigators assumed that Popkov would “remember” new episodes from time to time, since during the investigation he managed to get out of the high-security colony and live in a pre-trial detention center.
- Revealing the details of the previous crimes, Popkov told “Vesti-Irkutsk” in an interview that he has a dream to enter the army, and he is thinking about participating in the war against Ukraine.
