The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has announced a search for an economist, former deputy chairman of the Central Bank, Sergei Aleksashenko, according to the agency’s database. Aleksashenko is wanted under an article of the Criminal Code, but it is not known under which article.
On November 15, the State Duma commission to investigate the facts of interference by foreign states in the affairs of Russia asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to check the activities of Aleksashenko and economist Sergei Guriev for treason. The reason was their participation in the working group of Stanford University, which is engaged in the development of sanctions against Russia.
The international group on sanctions of the Stanford University is headed by the former US ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul and the head of the office of the president of Ukraine Andriy Yermak.
Sergey Aleksashenko headed the Central Bank in the late 1990s. In 2013, the economist left for the USA to work at Georgetown University. Aleksashenko talked about pressure from his ego to criticize the Russian economy.
In the early 2000s, Sergey Guriev worked as the rector of the Russian Economic School. In 2013, he emigrated to France. Works as one of the directors of the Paris Institute of Political Studies.
