The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia announced that Denis Kamalagin, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Pskovskaya guberniya” is wanted as part of the criminal case. The agency does not specify what kind of case is meant. The publication “Mediazon” drew attention to the information in the search database.

At the end of November, it became known that Kamalagin was accused in the criminal case of repeated discrediting of the Russian army. He was summoned for questioning. Kamalagin himself is outside Russia. On December 14, the court appointed him in absentia a restraining order in the form of a restraining order.

“Pskov province” reported that the case against Kamalagin was opened because of a video on the publication’s YouTube channel. It talked about the Russian missile attack in April 2023 on a residential building in Uman in the Cherkassy region.

Kamalagin is one of the first three journalists in Russia included by the Ministry of Justice in the list of so-called mass media – “foreign agents”. He was fined four times for violating the Russian legislation on “foreign agents”. Last year, an administrative protocol on discrediting the army was drawn up on him.

  • Legislation on the discrediting of the Russian army and the dissemination of false information about the actions of the Russian military was adopted by deputies of the State Duma and signed by President Vladimir Putin immediately after Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
  • Russian courts recognize as fakes and discredit any messages that contradict the Kremlin’s interpretation of events in Ukraine. In many cases, citizens were punished for even mentioning the war: Moscow calls it a “special military operation”, insisting on the limited nature of the hostilities.
