The Ministry of Transport will make announcements in English in the subway optional

The Ministry of Transport of Russia will abolish the mandatory duplication of all information in transport in English. The draft amendments to departmental orders are published on the regulatory acts portal. The Ministry of Transport explained its decision by the complaints of passengers, “increased information load” and “social and political situation in the country”.
Now all visual information in the metro, monorails and other modes of transport – station names, signs, metro diagrams – must be duplicated in English. Voice announcements must also sound in Russian and English. The Ministry intends to remove this rule, leaving the right of decision to the regions.
In the regions, some leaders did not approve the proposal of the Ministry of Transport. Director of Nizhny Novgorod Metro Oleg Yaushev noted that many foreign tourists come to the city, and dubbing is announced in English – a sign of hospitality. The Kazan “Metroelektrotrans” also said that they had not received any complaints about dubbing in English from citizens, but if there is an order to remove it, the company will comply.
