The Ministry of Youth Sports wants to keep the federations of national status in case their athletes participate in competitions together with Russians and Belarusians

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has published a draft resolution in which it plans to leave the federations with national status if their athletes participate in competitions together with Russians and Belarusians, and also introduces personal sanctions, he writes, referring to the ministry’s website.

The Ministry of Youth Sports condemned the International Olympic Committee’s March 28, 2023 recommendations to international federations and organizers of international sports events regarding the participation of athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports in international competitions. And in response, it prepared a draft resolution in which it is proposed to leave Ukrainian sports federations with the status of national ones, if their athletes will take part in competitions together with Russians and Belarusians.

“The possibility of depriving the All-Ukrainian sports federation of its national status in the event of the participation of athletes who are members of the respective sports federations in international sports competitions in which athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus take part,” the ministry’s resolution says.

The draft resolution states that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is working on a mechanism to support national federations in sports in respect of which international federations may impose fines for non-participation in international competitions. And also, together with the SBU, the method of applying personal special economic and other restrictive measures to sports federations and its members for their actions that “create real or potential threats to the interests of society and the state” is being studied.

The IOC criticized Ukraine’s decision not to allow its athletes to compete with the Russians in the qualifying competitions for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

In turn, according to a joint statement published by the British government on February 21, 2023, the United States, along with more than 30 other countries, including Canada and most of Europe, support the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions.
