The Moscow City Court left the journalist of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal under arrest Evan Hershkovych, who is accused of espionage, was reported by the “Mediazona” correspondent from the courtroom. Shortly before the start of the meeting, the Ural mass media reported on the detention of activist Yaroslav Shirshikov by the FSB in Yekaterinburg, who was the first to tell about the journalist’s detention on March 30. His girlfriend told the newspaper “Vechernye Vedomosti” that their house was searched. An FSB employee told her that Shirshikov was not detained, but “delivered for an interview.”
Hershkovich’s case
Son of Soviet emigrants, correspondent of one of the leading world publications, The Wall Street Journal, Evan Hershkovich was detained on March 29 in Yekaterinburg. The court charged him with espionage and placed him under arrest for two months.
The Russian investigation claims that Hershkovich collected secret information on the order of the United States about one of the enterprises of the military-industrial complex – which one is not disclosed, the materials of the case are classified. The Kremlin said that there was evidence against Hershkovich, but did not specify what exactly.
The US State Department recognized journalist Evan Hershkovich as “unlawfully detained” by Russia. This status is equivalent to the status of a hostage – Washington previously included Russia in the list of countries in which there is a threat of seizure of US citizens by the state.
Hershkovich faces up to 20 years in prison. Many experts assume that they want to exchange the journalist for one of the citizens of Russia, previously arrested for a similar article in Western countries.
