In 2023, the “Immortal Regiment” procession, which took place on May 9, will not take place in Russia. This was reported by its organizers.
The press service of the movement said that they decided to “leave the format of one street and one square” and offer Russians to honor the memory of heroes “for the whole day.”
Earlier, Victory parades were refused in the Belgorod and Kursk regions, as well as in the annexed Crimea. They did it for security reasons: the regions border Ukraine, where Russia started the war. The traditional parade on Red Square in Moscow, as expected, will take place.
“Immortal Regiment” was invented by Tomsk journalists in 2012. The action in memory of those who died during the Second World War was a mass procession with photographs of the participants of that war. In 2020 and 2021, the action was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2022 the procession took place in a traditional format.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the creators of the “Immortal Regiment”, who opposed the war, asked not to be associated with future marches due to a change in the original meaning of the action.
