The number of Russian servicemen killed in Ukraine has exceeded 31,000. This was reported by the BBC and Mediazon, which are jointly counting the losses. Journalists emphasize that these are only the dead, whose names and places of burial have been established from open sources. The real number of losses may be higher.

As of September 8, 31,665 deaths are known. 3534 of them are mobilized. Prisoners still make up the largest category among casualties, but the growth in their number is slowing down compared to the first half of the year.

Most funerals come to Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Rostov regions, Bashkiria and Buryatia. The large number of reports of deaths from the Krasnodar region and the Moscow region is explained, among other things, by the fact that there volunteers visit cemeteries and photograph the burials of soldiers — that is, the greater number of casualties becomes public knowledge.

Researchers are counting on open sources – reports from local administrations, mass media and relatives of the dead, as well as data from cemeteries. The real number of losses, in their opinion, can be two to two and a half times higher. So, at the end of May of this year, the estimate published by “Mediazone” and “Meduza” showed the number of people killed in the war at 47 thousand people. Journalists obtained this number based on data on the excess mortality of men of fighting age.

Since the previous report on August 25, 967 names have been added to the list.
