The Nobel Foundation has withdrawn invitations to ambassadors from Russia, Belarus and Iran to the award ceremony in Stockholm. This is reported on the foundation’s website.

The publication notes that the decision to invite official representatives of Russia, Belarus, and Iran to this year’s gala events caused a “violent reaction.” Ambassadors were not invited last year.

The foundation explained the decision to invite them this year with the desire “to spread as widely as possible the values and meanings that the Nobel Prize represents – for example, through a clear political message last year, when the peace prize was awarded to human rights fighters from Russia and Belarus, as well as Ukrainians who work with the documentation of Russian war criminals”.

The message notes that this caused a sharp reaction in society, including from Swedish politicians. Therefore, the fund changed its decision. As before, all ambassadors will be invited to the ceremony in Oslo, the publication says.
