Hunger is coming
Residents of seven countries (Somalia, South Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Haiti, Nigeria and Burkina Faso) faced famine in 2022, the consequences of which GNAFC estimates to be catastrophic.
The organization included Ukraine in the top ten countries/territories with the largest number of people experiencing a food security crisis — 8.9 million people, a quarter of the country’s population. Russia’s war had a serious impact on the economy of Ukraine, undermining the livelihood of its inhabitants, and unemployment and rising prices for food and heating are reducing the country’s purchasing power, the document notes.

The GNAFC report notes that in 2022, economic shocks surpassed conflicts as the main driver of acute food shortages in the world in terms of the number of countries affected by famine (27).
Russia’s war in Ukraine disrupted agricultural production and trade in the Black Sea region, which contributed to the growth of world food prices in the first half of 2022. Low-income countries that depend on food imports have suffered especially.
Food prices continue to remain historically high, and in 38 out of 58 countries with signs of famine, food inflation has exceeded 10%.
