The Olympic Committee of Russia will remain excluded from participation in the IOC

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne rejected Russia’s appeal against the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) suspension decision. The Olympic Committee of Russia will still not be able to participate in the activities of the IOC and receive funding as the National Olympic Committee. He can appeal the CAS verdict to the Swiss Supreme Court within 30 days.
The International Olympic Committee decided to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee from its activities on October 12, 2023 “until further notice”. The reason was that the Russian committee included in its composition the Olympic councils of the regions of Ukraine, which came under Russian control and which in September 2022 Russia declared as its “new territories” – parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The international community does not recognize their inclusion in Russia.
In early October 2023, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine filed a complaint with the IOC. The IOC considered the actions of Russian colleagues a violation of the Olympic Charter and suspended them. The Russian Olympic Committee called the IOC’s decision counterproductive and appealed to the CAS.
