The humanitarian pause in the war between Israel and the Hamas group, recognized as terrorist by the United States and the European Union, will be extended for another two days. This was reported by a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, which is participating in the negotiations. A representative of Hamas confirmed to Reuters the extension of the deal. There has been no official confirmation from the Israeli side yet. According to the previous agreement, the pause was supposed to end on Tuesday night.
Extending the pause will allow the release of more Israeli citizens and foreigners taken hostage by Hamas during the October 7 attack. As a response, Israel releases Palestinians convicted of terrorism. In addition, the pause allows humanitarian aid to be delivered to the Gaza Strip: food, water, medicine and fuel.
Israel does not negotiate with Hamas directly. Qatar, Egypt, and sometimes the United States act as mediators.
- During the current four-day humanitarian pause, which began on Friday, Hamas released 58 hostages. These are Israeli women and children, as well as foreigners. Israel, for its part, released more than 100 Palestinian prisoners – women and teenagers. The exchange of the fourth group of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners is expected this evening.
- The Israeli side has repeatedly clarified that it is a pause, not a truce, and after it ends, the Israel Defense Forces will resume hostilities until the complete destruction of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
