Arrested for burning the Koran in Volgograd, Nikita Zhuravel said that he was beaten in the Grozny pre-trial detention center by the 15-year-old son of the head of Chechnya, Adam Kadyrov. Mansur Soltaev, the human rights representative in the republic, reported the receipt of such a complaint. He claims that Tatiana Moskalkova, the Russian ombudsman, entrusted him with looking into the situation, she confirmed this.

“A corresponding appeal was received in my name, and I personally went to the pre-trial detention center… During the conversation, Nikita said that on the day of the meeting with the Head of the Czech Republic, after Ramzan Akhmatovich left the cell, he was beaten by Adam Kadyrov,” Soltaeva quotes state agency “Grozny-inform”.

On the eve of the beating of Zhuravel, the pro-government publications “ChP/Vainakh” and “ChP/Grozny” reported. They published posts of the same content with reference to information from employees of the FSIN administration in the republic, Kavkaz.Realii reports.

“Grozny-Inform” published a screenshot of the appeal, which was allegedly written by Zhuravel. According to him, Ramzan Kadyrov met with him in the pre-trial detention center “on the issue of accepting the religion of Islam.” As Zhuravel writes, after the departure of Kadyrov Sr., his son came and beat him.

Zhuravel was arrested until July 20, and at the end of May he was taken to a pre-trial detention center in Chechnya. The Republic’s Minister of National Policy, External Relations, Press and Information Akhmed Dudayev said that Zhuravel’s trial will be held in Chechnya, where he will also serve his sentence in case of an indictment.

Ramzan Kadyrov did not comment on reports of his son’s beating of an arrested person at the time of publication of this news.

  • A video of the burning of the Koran in Volgograd appeared on social networks on May 19. Two days later, law enforcement officials reported the arrest of a suspected local resident, Nikita Zhuravel, a native of Ukraine, who worked as a food delivery man. It is known that he moved to Volgograd from the annexed Crimea.
  • The head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, ordered the transfer of Zhuravel’s case to Chechnya. Soon, the 19-year-old teenager was taken to Grozny, where he was met with a summons to the “people’s court”. Representatives of the Russian authorities said that after the sentencing Zhuravel will serve his sentence in Chechnya – although formally the court has not yet issued a sentence of imprisonment.
  • Last October, Ramzan Kadyrov said that three of his underage sons – Akhmat, Eli and Adam – took part in hostilities in Ukraine. To prove his words, he published a video in which they shoot from a machine gun and a grenade launcher. Chechen opposition Telegram channels drew attention: details on the video indicate that the footage was shot in the rear.
  • In March, the sons of the head of Chechnya – 17-year-old Akhmat and 15-year-old Adam – received badges “For distinction in the fight against terrorism”. This was reported by the Republican Minister of National Policy, External Relations, Press and Information Akhmed Dudayev.
