The prosecution called for 18 years in prison for IB-Group founder Ilya Sachkov

The Prosecutor’s Office asked the Moscow City Court to sentence Ilya Sachkov, the founder of IB-Group, to 18 years in prison in the case of high treason. This was reported by Sachkov’s lawyer Sergey Afanasyev. Sachkov does not admit his guilt.

According to the lawyer, Sachkov’s case was considered by the court “at a sprint pace” – in just 10 days. The verdict will be announced on July 26.

Ilya Sachkov was arrested at the end of September 2021. According to the FSB, the businessman gave foreign special services some information that constitutes a state secret, but the details of the case are classified. Sachkov’s trial is held behind closed doors – neither journalists nor relatives of the accused are allowed to attend.

The businessman himself claims that the case against him was initiated by two FSB employees: the former head of the Information Security Center of the special service, Sergei Mikhailov, and the current head of the Center, Oleg Kashentsov.

In 2019, Mikhailov was sentenced to 22 years in prison on charges of treason (according to the investigation, he passed information about cybercriminals to Western intelligence services). Sachkov, who was one of the prosecution witnesses at that trial, claims that Mykhailov decided to take revenge on him for this. Kashentsov, according to the businessman, repeatedly threatened him with criminal prosecution. “These are people to whom my professional activity – the fight against cybercrime – greatly interfered,” Sachkov says.

  • Group-IB (now FACTT) is one of the leading Russian companies in the field of computer security. Among its clients are the largest Russian banks, including Sberbank, Tinkoff and Alfa-Bank, and the state corporation Rostec. The group advises the Russian special services and Interpol, and also participates in international investigations in the field of cybercrime
