The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don received the first criminal case against the Ukrainian military. The investigation charges Anton Cherednyk with criminal articles of violent seizure of power, cruel treatment of the civilian population, murder, and training for terrorist activities. Russian investigators claim that in March 2022, Cherednyk killed a civilian in the Mirny village of Mariupol.
In Ukraine, 21-year-old contract worker Vadym Shishimarin became the first convicted Russian on charges of violating the laws and customs of war. Ego was found guilty of murdering a civilian in the village of Chupakhovka, Sumy region. Shishimarin was sentenced to life in prison, but later the appeals court changed his sentence to 15 years of imprisonment. The serviceman admitted his guilt.
In August 2022, a Ukrainian court sentenced Russian tanker Mikhail Kulikov to 10 years in prison and found him guilty of shelling a residential building in Chernynov. Kulikov also pleaded guilty.
