During the year of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, the enemy caused almost UAH 1.9 trillion in damage to Ukraine’s environment.
About this told Minister of Environment Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strilets, the press service of the Ministry of Environment reports.
“During the year of the full-scale war, we and the specialists of the State Environmental Inspection have already documented more than 2,300 crimes against nature. The amount of damages reaches almost 1.9 trillion hryvnias,” he said. “Almost 500,000 hectares are currently under occupation or are in the war zone. 2.4 million hectares of forests have already been cleared and need to be restored.”
Currently, Strelets said, 10 national natural parks, 8 nature reserves, and 2 biosphere reserves are under occupation.
About 600 species of fauna and 750 species of flora are under threat of destruction – in particular, red book species. About a thousand cases of dolphin deaths have already been recorded on the coasts of Ukraine, Bulgaria and Turkey.
In addition, the most industrialized part of Ukraine is located in the combat zone. 132 mineral deposits are occupied, and the industry’s losses for the year reach 7.76 trillion hryvnias.
By its actions, Russia contributes to the worsening of the climate crisis, because it causes additional direct emissions of carbon into the atmosphere in the amount of about 33 million tons. More than 23 million tons of greenhouse gases were released into the atmosphere only from fires in forests, agricultural and other facilities during hostilities.
