Two hundred athletes signed a letter to the International Federation of Skiing and Snowboarding (FIS) with the demand to take measures in connection with climate change.
“We are already facing the consequences of climate change in our everyday life and in our profession. … Progressive actions are needed,” the letter says. The current efforts of FIS athletes have been assessed as insufficient.
Among other things, the authors of the letter suggested that the federation draw up a “geographically reasonable” schedule of the competition. Now athletes are forced to fly long distances several times an hour – changing the competition grid will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to global warming.
In addition, the athletes asked to postpone the ski season by a month in order to “keep up with climatic changes.”
Due to global warming, there is not enough snow in many alpine resorts this season, which has led to the cancellation of several ski competitions and vacations of vacationers. As the planet warms, this will happen more and more often.
“I want the next generations to experience winter and be able to do what I do,” said the Norwegian alpine skier Alexander Omodt Kylde – a two-time medalist of the 2022 Olympic Games and a medalist of the 2023 World Championships, who signed the letter.
- Global warming is largely caused by greenhouse gases. According to the World Meteorological Organization, in 2021 the concentration of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide reached record levels. It is expected that by the end of 2022, the content of these gases in the atmosphere will have increased even more.
- Also, due to global warming, every tenth species of animals and plants may disappear on Earth by 2100.
