Artyom Uss, a businessman and the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, escaped from house arrest in Italy. This was reported by the Italian publications La Stampa and ANSA.
According to journalists, Uss broke his electronic bracelet and hid from the apartment in Milan by the time the carabinieri arrived there. There is no official confirmation of this information.
On March 21, it became known that the appeals court of Milan approved the extradition of Uss to the USA. There, he is accused of supplying electronics and Venezuelan oil to circumvent the sanctions regime, money laundering, and bank fraud.
Washington claims that US companies bought electronics and sent them to Russia to manufacturers included in the sanctions list. In particular, we are talking about modern semiconductors and microprocessors that are used in Russian fighters, missile systems, adjustable ammunition, radars and satellites.
Uss denies guilt and asks to extradite him to Russia. Already after the arrest in the suburbs of Milan, the businessman was arrested in absentia by the Meshchansky Court of Moscow on suspicion of money laundering. The details of this case are unknown, the arrest in absentia can be used to free the businessman from extradition to New York.
ANSA, citing lawyers, writes that the United States may consider the subsequent exchange of Uss for the American Paul Whelan, who in 2020 was sentenced to 16 years in prison on charges of espionage.
