The sharp increase in the price of chicken eggs in Russia is connected with the increase in the quality of life of citizens, said Vladimir Gutenev, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Industry and Trade. According to him, it was possible to establish the relationship because specialists “tracked the increase in demand in time.” “Citizens have increased egg consumption, and unsatisfied demand creates a deficit,” Gutenev explained.

Earlier, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, on the direct line and at the final press conference, also reported that the high cost of chicken eggs in the country is due to an increase in demand against the background of rising incomes of the population. At the same time, he reproached the government for not taking care of increasing the import of eggs.

On December 13, the Government of Russia approved zeroing of import duties on chicken eggs from January 1 to June 30, 2024. The Ministry of Agriculture reported on negotiations with so-called friendly countries – primarily Azerbaijan and Turkey – on increasing product imports into the country.

  • Food products in Russia have steadily risen in price in recent months, but the sharpest jump in prices is associated with chicken eggs: according to official data from Rosstat, they rose by 15.1 percent in November, by 35.5 percent since the beginning of the year, and in annual terms by 40.3 percent. There are reports from Russian cities about queues for relatively cheap eggs, as well as the fact that some stores have limited their availability to one hand or started selling eggs individually.
  • On Thursday, the newspaper “Kommersant” with reference to large producers reported a sharp increase in prices, from 5 to 20%, from the beginning of 2024 for a wide range of goods – from dairy products and juices to coffee and confectionery products. The manufacturing companies argue for the rise in prices due to the exchange rate and the increase in the cost of services for the transportation of goods within Russia. Carriers complain about the increase in expenses for personnel, fleet and warehouse rent.
