Timur Garipov, a sixth-year student of the St. Petersburg Pediatric Medical State University, was reinstated in his studies. Earlier, the court found his dismissal illegal and awarded him 30,000 rubles for moral damages. This was reported by the magazine for students “Groza”.
Garipov was expelled in March after being detained at an anti-war rally. The court arrested him for seven days on the charge of participation in an unauthorized action. Garipov himself claimed that he did not participate in the action, but “just went about his business.”
Garipov sued the university. In September, the court declared his dismissal illegal and demanded 30,000 rubles as moral compensation from the university. In February, the university’s disciplinary commission decided to reinstate Garipov – he only had to write an application.
Three more female students were expelled from this university for participating in anti-war actions – due to “behavior incompatible with the high rank of a doctor and student of a medical university.”
- Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. After that, Russian universities began to be persecuted for their anti-war stance. The same Pediatric University “reviewed the personal affairs” of employees who signed anti-war letters. At least two associate professors were fired from HSE because of their anti-war posts on social networks.
- In June, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin advised teachers opposing the war in Ukraine to “get up and leave.” In October, the assistant to the President of Russia, Vladimir Medinsky, called the students (and in the original version, the teachers) of the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University animals because of their liberal views.
