The Supreme Court of Bashkortostan rejected an appeal against the arrest of activist and RusNews journalist Olga Komleva in the criminal case of participation in an extremist community. We are talking about the Anti-corruption Fund founded by Alexei Navalny. Komleva will remain in pre-trial detention center until May 27. RusNews writes about it.

Komlevoy’s support group brought sureties for the journalist to the meeting, but the prosecutor ignored the request to take them.

The journalist’s defense stated that they do not agree with the court’s decision and will appeal it. “Volunteering is not an “extremist” activity. FBK was a registered and legal organization at the time it was presented with” cooperation with the foundation, lawyer Mikhail Lavrentyev said.

Olga Komlevoy, 45 years old. Before the ban on organizations created by Alexei Navalny, she worked as a volunteer in the Ufa politician’s headquarters. In 2021, the activist was fined for participating in rallies in support of Navalny.

In addition, Komleva collaborated with RusNews, covering protest actions for it, in particular, the January mass protests in the Bashkir city of Baymak, which were caused by the verdict against environmental activist Fail Alsynov.

It became known about Komleva’s detention on March 27. She was taken to the Investigative Committee under the pretext of coercive pretext for questioning in the FBK case. Already in the department of the Investigative Committee, the activist was accused of participating in an extremist community. The next day she was arrested.

  • The Russian authorities have declared FBK and Navalny’s headquarters to be extremist. People who were somehow connected with them may face criminal prosecution.
  • The former head of Navalny’s headquarters in Ufa, Lilia Chanysheva, was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison – this is the first sentence in Russia related to the recognition of FBK and Navalny’s headquarters as extremists.
