The Moscow City Court sentenced taxi driver Akhajon Zohidov to 13 years in a strict regime colony on charges of treason and smuggling. Mediazona writes about this from the courtroom.

The judge specified that he found Zotov guilty of two episodes of smuggling and six episodes of preparation for it. Zohidova’s lawyer refused to answer “Mediazone” whether her client will admit guilt, but promised to appeal the “severity of the punishment”.

There are no details of the case, as is usually the case with cases of treason. It is known that Zohidov was detained in September 2022, after which he was immediately sent to a pre-trial detention center.

  • In 2023, dozens of people were arrested in Russia on charges of treason. At the same time, the punishment under this article was toughened: now it is punishable by life imprisonment.
  • The number of initiated cases in 2023 is many times higher than the number of cases in previous years: last year there were twenty of them, which became the maximum value in modern Russia. For the entire period of 1997-2021, 117 people were accused of treason.
