Scientist Vladyslav Galkin was arrested in Tomsk on charges of treason. T-invariant writes about this with reference to the local court.

The publication notes that Galkin is a permanent co-author of Valery Zvegintsev, who was arrested on suspicion of treason in April 2023. Together they (usually with other co-authors) wrote many works on hypersonic technologies.

After Zvegintsev’s arrest, his colleagues from the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences wrote an open letter in which they spoke in defense of the arrested scientists and called to save Russian aerodynamic science.

In addition to Galkin and Zvegintsev, Anatoly Maslov and Alexander Shiplyuk, who were also involved in hypersonic technologies, are now under arrest. In June 2022, the Novosibirsk physicist Dmitry Kolker was arrested – he was taken from the hospital with the fourth stage of cancer. Three days later, the family was informed of his death.

Ivan Pavlov, a lawyer and founder of the human rights organization “Pervyi Otdel”, believes that the cases against scientists are connected precisely with hypersonic topics. “A few years ago, Putin instructed to protect promising Russian technologies in hypersonics, so the Chekists are practicing,” he explained to T-invariant.

According to Pavlov, participation in any international scientific project can be a reason for initiating a case of treason, if the FSB officers consider it a guest house.

  • In May 2023, the vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the chairman of its Siberian branch, Valentin Parmon, said that over the past five years, Russia has lost 50,000 scientists – like no other.
