The U2 soloist called for chanting Navalny’s name at the concert

At a concert in Las Vegas, the lead singer of the Irish rock group U2, Bono, called on the audience to chant the name of Alexei Navalny. The musician, who is known for his active civic stance, spoke from the stage about the death of a Russian opposition politician whose name, as Bono noted, Russian President Vladimir Putin never mentions.

The beginning of Bono’s speech, according to Meduza, was devoted to Ukraine. The musician reminded that next week it will be two years since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Bono called on the US authorities to give the Ukrainians everything they need, as they are fighting for freedom.

“For these people, freedom is the most important word in the world. So important that Ukrainians fight and die for it. And so important that Alexei Navalny decided to give up his [свободы]. Putin will never say his name. Therefore, I thought that today there are free people here, people who believe in freedom… We must pronounce his name,” said the U2 musician.

After that, the audience began to chant the name of Alexei Navalny, and the musicians played the song “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (“Don’t think it’s the end”) of the Crowded House group, “Meduza” writes.

• The leader of the band U2, Bono, came out in support of Ukraine immediately after the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. In May 2022, he and the backing vocalist of the Edge band played a concert at the Khreshchatyk subway station in Kyiv.
