The United States accused 40 Chinese police officers of illegal persecution

The US Department of Justice has accused 40 Chinese police officers of illegally persecuting Chinese political activists living abroad, including in America. The agency declared the existence of a transnational repressive network, with the help of which the Chinese authorities persecute dissidents who do not agree with the policies of the CCP.
According to the investigation, the police created fake accounts in social networks, from which they discredited Chinese dissidents living abroad. Some of them cooperated with employees of American telecommunications companies and with their help tried to block dissidents’ access to media platforms. They also recruited other US citizens, including for espionage.
As the representative of the New York police, Breon Peace, said, 34 of the accused are employees of the Ministry of Public Security of China and belong to the “working group of the special project 912” – a division of the Chinese special services that is engaged in monitoring Chinese opposition parties in other countries.
Also on Monday, two people were arrested in the USA, who are suspected of creating a secret branch of the Chinese police in New York.
Earlier, human rights organizations reported that China’s special services own an extensive network of semi-legal police offices in at least 53 countries around the world. They are engaged in surveillance of Chinese citizens living in these countries, and in some cases their persecution, blackmail and return to their families.
Official Beijing does not deny the presence of its police units in different countries of the world, but claims that they are engaged exclusively in helping Chinese living abroad – for example, in issuing new documents and extending old ones, such as driver’s licenses.
