The State Duma introduced amendments providing for the introduction of a new article in the Criminal Code – “Providing assistance in the implementation of decisions of international organizations in which the Russian Federation does not participate, or foreign state bodies.” It presupposes a punishment of up to five years of imprisonment, – reports OVD.Info.

From the text of the amendment, it is not clear whether its effect will be extended, for example, to interaction with the ECHR, where the complaints of Russian citizens are still considered. The Russian authorities have declared that they will not implement the decisions of this body.

Amendments are proposed to the draft law, which has already been adopted in the first reading. They also provide for toughening of punishment under a number of articles of the Criminal Code, including treason. The project is published on the “Zakonotvorchestvo” portal.

According to the article on treason, according to the draft law, if the amendments are adopted, a penalty of up to life imprisonment can be imposed. It is also proposed to toughen the possible punishment under the article on sabotage – also to life imprisonment with confiscation of property. According to the article about the act of terrorism, it is proposed to increase the maximum penalty to 20 years of imprisonment. Punishments for a number of articles are becoming more severe.

As noted by OVD.Info, amendments were made to the draft law, which has been under consideration by the Duma since November 2022. The second reading should now take place on April 18. Then, according to the experience of the State Duma, the draft may be adopted in the final third reading.
