In the coming weeks, the USA will begin training the Ukrainian military on Abrams tanks. This was announced by representatives of the American army at a meeting of defense ministers in Ramstein. The training will take place at the Grafenwohr military base in Germany and will last 10 weeks. The USA intends to transfer 31 “Abrams” to the base by the end of May.
As the Associated Press clarifies, the Abrams will not be used for training, which will then go to the front. 31 tanks, intended for transfer to Ukraine, are now being completed in the USA to meet Ukrainian conditions. The retraining of tanks in the USA and the training of Ukrainian servicemen in Germany will take place at the same time, so that by the time the “Abrams” are handed over to Ukraine, the tankers will be immediately ready to use them on the battlefield.
About 250 soldiers are expected to be trained – both tankers and mechanics who will maintain and repair combat vehicles.
- Since the beginning of the war, 8,800 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained with the assistance of the Pentagon. About 2,500 more are currently studying.
- The meeting of defense ministers at the Ramstein air base is taking place on Friday. This is already the 11th meeting of countries supporting Ukraine in this format. US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin once again stated that the Western allies will support Ukraine “as much as necessary”.
