The Vilnius Forum of Free Russia was recognized as an undesirable organization

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia recognized the Lithuanian Forum of Free Russia as an undesirable organization. The agency traditionally explained this as a “threat to the constitutional system and security” of the country.

The Free Russia Forum was created in 2016 by politician and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and former executive director of the Russian democratic movement “Solidarity” Ivan Tyutryn. The conference was held twice an hour in Vilnius. Representatives of the Russian opposition met there.

In 2022, after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Free Russia Forum held three anti-war conferences in Vilnius.

Earlier, the General Prosecutor’s Office recognized the legal entity of the “Medusa” publication in Latvia — SIA “Medusa Project” — as an undesirable organization.

  • The Law on Unwanted Organizations in Russia was adopted in 2015. Recognizing the organization as undesirable means that any of its activities on the territory of Russia are prohibited, and cooperation with it can lead to the initiation of a criminal case and punishment in the form of imprisonment.
