On February 1, the Basmanny Court of Moscow sentenced Alexander Nevzorov in absentia to eight years in a general regime colony. He was also banned from administering Internet resources for four years. The journalist was found guilty of an article about fakes about the Russian army in connection with his publications about the alleged crimes of the Russian military in the Ukrainian cities of Mariupol and Bucha.
The day before, the prosecution asked that he be sentenced to nine years in prison.
According to the investigation, from the beginning of March to the end of May, Nevzorov, while outside of Russia, published texts and videos with “obviously false information” about the events in Mariupol and Buche after the start of the war in his Telegram channel, YouTube channel, and Instagram. The Russian authorities consider any information that contradicts the official reports of the Ministry of Defense to be obviously false.
On April 22, the journalist was recognized as a “foreign agent”, and on the 29th, he was declared wanted in a criminal case. On May 6, the court arrested Nevzorov in absentia.
Alexander Nevzorov is abroad. In Russia, a former TV presenter, member of the State Duma and a trusted representative of Vladimir Putin, became one of the first defendants under the article on fakes, which was introduced into the Criminal Code shortly after the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Now Nevzorov takes a radically anti-Putin position and supports Ukraine. It was reported that he received Ukrainian citizenship.
The maximum punishment under the article on fakes is ten years in prison. At the moment, the longest term – 8.5 years – was given to the opposition politician Ilya Yashin, also for the video about the events in Buche.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, hundreds of civilians died in Bucha during the Russian occupation, thousands or even tens of thousands died in Mariupol during the storming of the city. There is no accurate information on the number of dead in Mariupol, the city is now under Russian control.
