The website of the Moscow Helsinki Group is blocked in Russia

Roskomnadzor (RKN) has blocked the website of the human rights organization Moskovskaya Helsinki Group in Russia, Interfax reported with a link to the service’s data.

According to the information in the RKN universal service for verification
restrictions on access to pages and sites on the Internet, access to the mhg.ru site in Russia is limited. At whose request the resource was entered into the register of information prohibited in the country, it is not specified, notes “Interfax”. The Agency turned to the RKN for a comment.

The “Roskomsvoboda” project drew attention to the blocking of the website of the human rights organization on Tuesday. He also notes that the reasons for the decision are unknown, as well as at the request of which body it was made.

At the end of last month, the Moscow City Court liquidated the Moscow Helsinki Group, the oldest human rights organization operating in Russia, at the request of the city administration of the Ministry of Justice. In its lawsuit, the Ministry of Justice claimed that MHG violates the law on public associations by conducting its activities outside the Moscow region. The agency also pointed out that the organization’s charter does not meet the current requirements of the law. The MHG stated that they will appeal the liquidation decision.

In December 2021, the Moscow City Court liquidated the second oldest human rights group in Russia – Memorial Society and its human rights center. The decision was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2022 and was criticized by international non-governmental organizations, human rights groups and Nobel laureates.
