The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov remains in his post after he “achieved a meeting” with the country’s president Volodymyr Zelensky the day before, reports the Russian service of the BBC with reference to its sources in Kyiv.
Earlier, the head of the “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, David Arakhamia, declared Reznikov’s resignation as a settled issue and announced the appointment of Kirill Budanov to the vacant post of the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine.
Reznikov himself, answering the question about the upcoming resignation, said that no one had informed him about it. On Tuesday, the head of the military department received in Kyiv the Minister of Defense of Germany Boris Pistorius, who arrived in Ukraine on an unannounced visit. Reznikov did not comment on the information about the meeting with Zelensky and its results.
- Oleksiy Reznikov was appointed Minister of Defense of Ukraine in November 2021. At the same time, he has no military education: he is a lawyer by profession. Before his appointment as the head of the military department, Reznikov was the minister for the reintegration of temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
- Recently, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense has been increasingly criticized in Ukraine. At the end of January, Ukrainian journalist, the author of the “Our Money” project Yury Nikolov, published an investigation according to which the Ministry of Defense purchases food for military units at inflated prices. The publication caused a wide public outcry. President Volodymyr Zelensky promised to conduct a comprehensive and public investigation into corrupt procurement. In addition, since the beginning of the year for the Ukrainian army, the situation at the front has worsened: the Russian troops went on the offensive, and for the first time after the loss of previously occupied territories in the Luhansk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions occupied several settlements important for further attacks.
