US presidential security adviser Jake Sullivan said at a press briefing at the White House on Friday that the US approves the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine. The government’s official statement on this issue will follow in a few hours, he said.
Sullivan emphasized that the US understands the dangers of cluster munitions, and therefore hesitated for a long time to make such a decision. However, since the Russian army already uses similar shells on the territory of Ukraine, Ukraine should be able to defend itself with comparable weapons.
He also reported that he had received assurances from the Ukrainian side that it would use cluster munitions with extreme caution and would try to ensure the safety of civilians.
According to Sullivan, the use of cluster shells is always associated with the risk that part of the explosive elements will remain unexploded, which will require subsequent demining. But, he said, the Ukrainian territories, where the fighting is going on, need total demining anyway, and the US will help Ukraine in this, regardless of what weapons they supply.
