Flows of water caused by the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station entered the Black Sea and reached the Odesa region. As reported by local channels, the waves are carrying washed away parts of houses, garbage, household appliances and furniture to the shores and beaches. Mines driven by the current, washed away from minefields in the Kherson region, were also spotted on the coast.

Odessa edition “Dumskaya” publishes photos and videos of bushes and trees, gas cylinders, refrigerators, sofas and chairs nailed to the shore. A broken village toilet was brought to the beach of Chernomorska Volny. Significant pollution of sea water is reported.

Residents are most worried about various mines, which were also washed away by water from the washed-out banks of the Dnieper below the Kakhovskaya HPP. Local mass media believe that the number of anti-personnel, anti-landing and other mines that floated into the sea can be counted in the thousands.

According to the military correspondent of “Dumskaya” Grigory Ak-Murza, most of the mines washed away by water are various anti-personnel munitions, mainly of the PMN (“anti-personnel pressure mine”) type, PMN-2, PMN-3 and PMN-4. All of them have a sealed plastic case and significant buoyancy. Also, the banks and the Dnieper delta in the flood zone were mined with PFM-1 and PFM-1c mines, nicknamed “petals” for their characteristic shape. They are also plastic and easily spread by water.

Local residents try to clean the coast from garbage by themselves. The authorities urge them to be careful and contact the military if mines and other dangerous objects are discovered.

  • It became known about the breakthrough of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam on the Dnieper on the night of June 6. Due to the uncontrolled discharge of water from the reservoir, settlements on both banks of the Dnieper began to flood. The authorities of Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of undermining the dam. In addition, there is a version that the cause of the disaster was the previous damage to the station.
  • 600 square kilometers of the Kherson region were under water, of which about 30% is the right-bank part, the rest is the left bank controlled by Russia. More than 50 settlements were completely or partially flooded on both banks of the Dnieper.
  • Environmentalists warn that, in addition to household waste and sewage waste, a lot of harmful substances got into the water of the flooded Kherson region. The water washed away cemeteries and cattle graves. Gasoline and diesel fuel from washed-out gas stations, engine oil and fuel oil from the destroyed engine room of the Kakhovskaya HPP, toxic industrial waste accumulated at the bottom of the Dnieper, and corpses of dead animals got into it. All this can lead to an ecological disaster in the near future.
