On Monday morning, the oppositionist Alexei Navalny was again not connected via video link to the hearing in the Kovrov city court of the Vladimir region. For the sixth day, Navalny’s associates have no information about what is happening to Navalny – they have not allowed a lawyer to visit him in the colony all this time. This was reported in the Telegram channel of Navalny’s team.
Representatives of the colony claim that Navalny is not connected via video link, because “since December 7, they cannot fix the electricity.” writes the press secretary of the politician Kira Yarmysh. There are no official comments from the FSIN.
Lawyers also can’t get into Navalny’s prison — they haven’t been allowed in since December 6.
In late November-early December, according to Navalny’s associates, he felt ill in the cell. Ruslan Shavetdinov and Kira Yarmysh noted that the politician was deprived of food, kept in a cell without ventilation and reduced the time of walks to a minimum.
- Navalny’s associates announced on December 7, the day of the presidential election in Russia, the beginning of a campaign against the election of Vladimir Putin for a new term. This was announced in the social networks of Navalny and the Anti-corruption Fund created by him.
- In August 2023, the Moscow City Court found Navalny guilty of creating an extremist community, calling for extremism and his financing, and sentenced the politician to 19 years in a special regime colony.
- Now Navalny is in a high-security prison in the Vladimir region on charges of fraud. In September 2023, as an “incorrigible” he was transferred to a single room of the cell type for an hour – “the most severe punishment possible in all types of colonies,” he wrote.
- The politician was sent to a detention center more than 20 times. The reasons, for example, were an unbuttoned button and refusal to wash the fence.
- Three lawyers who provided legal assistance to Navalny were previously placed in pre-trial detention center. A case was brought against them for participation in an extremist community, which the Russian authorities consider the Anti-Corruption Fund and Navalny’s headquarters.
- Navalny has pleaded not guilty, many human rights organizations have recognized him as a political prisoner.
