Three leading actresses left the Voronezh Chamber Theater in protest against the dismissal of artistic director Mikhail Bychkov for his anti-war stance.

The announcement of the departure of Natalya Shevchenko, Tatiana Babenkova and Yana Kuzyna was published on the theater’s VKontakte page.

Shevchenko is an honored artist of Russia and one of the founders of the Voronezh Chamber Theater. She played central roles in several performances. Babenkova and Kuzyna are nominees for the Golden Mask.

The theater informs that due to the departure of Babenkova, the performances “Thunderstorm”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Stone” and “Camera obscura” will disappear from the repertoire forever.

The dismissal of the founder of the Voronezh Chamber Theater and its artistic director, Mikhail Bychkov, was officially announced on November 22, but the reasons were not given. In the report of “Vesty Voronezh” with reference to a source in the regional authorities, it was stated that Bychkov “has not lost the desire to write openly condemning letters, and the theater did not try to support “participants of the SVO (special military operation – this is how the Russian authorities call the war in Ukraine) and members of their families with discounted tickets.” The 66-year-old director himself did not comment on the dismissal.

The theater staff wrote an open letter to the Ministry of Culture of Russia, the governor of the Voronezh region and the presidential administration with a request to return Bychkov to the position of artistic director “in the theater he created.” The petition was signed by more than 60 employees of the Voronezh Chamber Theater.

  • On February 26, 2022, Bychkov signed an appeal by theater figures calling for an end to the war in Ukraine. In the same spring, he left the Presidential Council on Culture and Art.
