On Friday, Ukraine and the Netherlands signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation and long-term support for Ukraine. The protocol was signed in Kharkov by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte.

As Volodymyr Zelensky reported, as part of the agreement, Ukraine will receive military aid from the Netherlands in the amount of two billion euros this year. Next, the Netherlands will provide support to Ukraine for the next 10 years. Special emphasis will be placed on the support of the air force, anti-aircraft defense, fleet and long-range artillery. The Netherlands also undertakes to observe sanctions against Russia as an aggressor country, and to support Ukraine’s possible accession to NATO.

During his visit to Kharkiv, Mark Rutte attended a briefing with the participation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov and the Commander of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Mykola Oleschuk.

This is already the seventh bilateral agreement on defense cooperation that Ukraine has concluded with allied countries. Earlier, similar agreements with it were signed by Great Britain, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy and Canada. The agreements, in addition to actual subsidies for military aid to Ukraine and supplies of weapons to it, set out the positions of allied countries regarding sanctions against Russia and mechanisms for possible emergency consultations on issues of Russian aggression in the future.

  • As noted by the international media, the signing of bilateral agreements between Kyiv and partner countries can speed up Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
