Ukraine has banned its athletes from participating in competitions to which Russians and Belarusians are admitted. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine made a decision on this.
The ban also applies to qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In case of violation of the accepted rules, the sports federation may lose its national status, said Cabinet Minister Oleg Nemchynov.
The decision was made in response to the resolution of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which recommended allowing Russians and Belarusians to compete in neutral status. The recommendations do not apply to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and 2026 in Milan, the IOC emphasized.
- Russian and Belarusian athletes were suspended from international competitions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- In February 2023, 35 countries, including Great Britain, declared that they still supported the suspension of athletes from Russia and Belarus. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, also urged not to allow Russians to the Olympics, stating that he believes that their mere presence would be a “manifestation of violence and lawlessness.”
