Ukrainians have become less likely to face fraud while online shopping – study

According to CBR research, the share of people who came in contact with scammers on the Internet decreased from 27% to 20%. Those who refused online shopping due to the fear of being cheated also decreased, and the most popular type of fraud was non-shipping of paid goods. This is stated in the OLX study.

Over the past hour, 65% of people who contacted the OLX Support Service with complaints about phishing did not lose money thanks to constant information and training on the platform, their own attentiveness, knowledge of the rules and timely access to specialists. In 2021, this indicator was slightly lower — 61%.
In addition, OLX registered fewer requests for prepayment: 4,874 thousand applications compared to 6,000 in 2021. The number of recorded cases with a request to deceive the seller (that is, the user sent the goods, but did not receive the funds) also decreased: 162 cases compared to 200 in 2021.
The increase in education in the field of cyber security is also evidenced by the decrease in requests for fraud outside the platform — the number of such cases decreased by more than half in accordance with 2021.
Rules of safe shopping on the Internet
Do not transfer communication to third-party messengers. Basically, attackers try to transfer communication from the personal account of the platform to third-party messengers: Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp. However, only in the protected chats of the platforms themselves, such as OLX, all the possibilities for convenient and safe communication are provided.
Do not click on suspicious links and check them. One of the “golden” rules of safe online shopping is ignoring external links. Even if OLX appears in the website address, there is a suspicion that this is a phishing copy that carries a threat. Let’s say you enter your personal and payment data on a fake site and transfer your funds to fraudsters. For this, it is important to check all links on special platforms. For example, this can be done on the safety.olx.ua page.
Do not agree to prepayment. Any requests for advance payments (delivery costs, reserve of goods, etc.) can hide a request for fraud. For this, place orders exclusively on the OLX platform. Thanks to the OLX Delivery service, the seller will receive payment only after the buyer picks up the parcel at the branch of the partner carrier: “Novaya pochta”, Ukrpochta or Meest.
Do not share personal information, passwords and SMS codes. Any confidential information, for example, bank card data, a three-digit code on its back, or SMS passwords, is data that should not be shared with others under any circumstances. If an employee of the bank’s security service asks you on the phone, it is definitely a scammer, since even bank employees do not have the authority to request such information.
