Ukrenergo explained why they are raising electricity tariffs

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the revenue of Ukrenergo and oblenergo fell by approximately 30%, because in the conditions of the war, energy companies lost part of their generation and consumers. This was the reason for the increase in the electricity tariff, said on the air “Svoboda. Utro” (a project of Radio Svoboda) Vladimir Kudrytskyi, Chairman of the Board of NEC “Ukrenergo”.

“We lost part of the generation and part of the consumers. For example, grid companies, such as Ukrenergo and oblenergo, their revenue fell automatically by 30 percent simply due to the fact that consumption was greatly reduced,” said Kudrytskyi.

According to him, generating companies do not receive funds due to the fact that a lot of generation has been cut. At the same time, part of the generating capacity is temporarily occupied.

“The most striking example is the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. But not only her. There is also the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power plant, there are thermal power plants in the Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Luhansk regions. Many assets were lost and, of course, it became much more difficult to make ends meet,” he noted.

At the same time, he said that the deficit in finances in the energy system had been there for a long time, but with the beginning of a full-scale invasion, it had significantly increased.

“For a long enough period, the energy sector was underfunded. It didn’t start yesterday or the day before yesterday. This is such a systemic problem that has lasted for years. Now, in the conditions of a full-scale invasion, starting from February 2022, the deficit of financial resources in the system has increased,” says the chairman of the board of NEC “Ukrenergo”.

Let’s remind

The Ministry of Finance wrote that the Cabinet of Ministers approved a decision to increase the electricity tariff for the population to UAH 2.64/kWh from June 1.
