Journalist and politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is accused of so-called fakes about the army and treason, gave his last word in court on Monday. He declared his innocence and said that what he did was fine. Kara-Murza’s speech was complete published in his twitter. The court session was closed.

Kara-Murza considers the current legal situation in Russia similar to the 1930s of the 20th century. He noted that he subscribes to every word of the accusation, but is proud of his actions. He blames himself only for the fact that during his years of activity he could not sufficiently convince his fellow citizens how dangerous the Kremlin regime is.

Kara-Murza expressed the hope that sooner or later the Russian society will change. He emphasized that he continues to believe in the country and its people.

Vladimir Kara-Murza will be sentenced next Monday, April 17.

  • Vladimir Kara-Murza has been in pre-trial detention center since April 2022. In early March, the court extended the arrest for another six months. Three criminal cases have been initiated against the politician: about the so-called fakes about the Russian army, about high treason and about the implementation of the activities of an “undesirable organization” for working with “Open Russia”.
  • On April 6, the state prosecution requested 25 years of imprisonment for Kara-Murza.
  • Independent journalists and human rights defenders demand the termination of the criminal prosecution of Vladimir Kara-Murza and his immediate release from pretrial detention.
