Presidents of Ukraine and Poland Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Andrzej Duda met on Sunday in Lutsk, the administrative center of the Volyn region in western Ukraine. The visit was not announced in advance.
The meeting of the heads of state took place on the eve of the anniversary of the so-called Volyn tragedy of 1943, when the forces of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) killed more than 50 thousand local residents of Polish origin.
The presidents visited the liturgy in the Catholic Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. “Together with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, we pay tribute to the murdered Poles,” Duda wrote on Twitter.
The interpretation of the tragic events in Volhynia in 1943 is one of the most painful questions in the general history of Poland and Ukraine. Earlier, Andrzej Duda noted that in recent years, the Ukrainian government has done a lot for rapprochement in this region. In particular, search and exhumation work, which had not been carried out before, became possible.
“This indicates a qualitative change: today’s Ukrainian government has a greater understanding of this issue than its predecessors a few years ago,” said the Polish president.
- On his previous visit to Kyiv on June 28, Andrzej Duda met with Vladimir Zelensky and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. They discussed measures to support Ukraine from their countries and the European Union.
