In Khabarovsk, several dozen people went to a protest action on the third anniversary of the detention and arrest of the ex-governor of the region, Sergei Furgal. The majority of those who came had with them posters or flags with the image of the ex-official, reports Sibir.Realii.
The participants of the action claimed that the politician was not guilty and demanded his immediate release. In addition, the protesters are convinced that Furgal should return to the position of head of the region.
According to the activists, in the morning in Khabarovsk, before the start of the action, several people and the journalist of Aktyvatika, Kristina Hrytsaenko, were detained. Now everyone has already been released from the police station, notes “OVD-Info”.
Traditional actions in support of the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory were also held in Novosibirsk. Activists on single pickets also demanded the release of political prisoners.
- On February 10, the Moscow Regional Court sentenced Sergei Furgal to 22 years in a strict-regime prison. Jurors found the former governor guilty of organizing an assassination attempt on three business competitors. Furgal himself did not admit guilt, considering his persecution to be political. The lawyers considered the sentence illegal and unfounded.
- Furgal was detained in Khabarovsk in July 2020 and immediately sent to Moscow. He became an accused in a criminal case after the gubernatorial elections in 2018. Furgal defeated the Kremlin-backed candidate Vyacheslav Short.
- After Furgal’s arrest, numerous protest actions were held in support of the politician in Khabarovsk for several months.
