A court in Moscow fined the Wikimedia Foundation company, which manages Wikipedia, two million rubles for refusing to remove an article about the 40th engineer-sapper regiment.

As the “Project” found out, this regiment, based in the Tyumen region, participated in the invasion of Ukraine from the northeast. In “Wikipedia” the place of deployment of the regiment, the battalions included in it, the equipment used by it and information about losses are indicated. The court considered this information prohibited in Russia.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “Wikipedia” has already imposed ten fines for refusing to delete materials, “Mediazona” drew attention. Their total amount reaches almost 17 million rubles.

Wikimedia stated that the information in the articles, which were discussed in the courts, was obtained from reliable sources and corresponds to the standards of “Wikipedia”.

  • In May 2022, Roskomnadzor added the Wikimedia Foundation to the list of companies required to open a representative office in Russia. The company did not do this. Roskomnadzor obliged searchers on the territory of the country to indicate that the fund violates Russian legislation.
