WSJ: Russia supplies Iran with cyber weapons in exchange for Shahedi

In exchange for relatively cheap and effective drones used to strike Ukrainian infrastructure, Russia supplies Iran with cyber weapons, including digital surveillance.

According to the newspaper’s interlocutors among US and Iranian officials, cooperation between Moscow and Tehran intensified after the latter agreed to provide, in addition to drones, short-range missiles and tank and artillery shells.
“The Russian authorities have decided that the benefits of deepening military relations with Iran outweigh any disadvantages,” the article says.
Iran is seeking cyber assistance, as well as dozens of elite Russian attack helicopters and fighter jets and help with its long-range missile program, according to WSJ interviewees.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the key supplier of cyber services to Iran is the Russian company “Protey”, which has contracts with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
Among other things, since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Russia has provided Iran with communications monitoring equipment, as well as wiretapping devices, advanced cameras and lie detectors. It is also about software that will allow the Iranian authorities to hack the phones of dissidents and political opponents.
Iran has long worked to develop its cyberweapons, and Iranian government hackers carry out disinformation campaigns and attack infrastructure in rival countries such as the United States and Saudi Arabia.
As you know, since the summer of 2022, Russia has been using Iranian-made Shahed drones in Ukraine, which it calls its own development “Geranium”. Despite the assertions of Kyiv and the West, Iran has repeatedly denied that it is helping the Russian Federation with weapons – but has already admitted that it transferred drones before the start of a full-scale invasion.
Since then, the US and other Western countries have consistently imposed sanctions against Iranian companies and people involved in the production of drones and their provision to Russia.
