Zelenskyi’s office discussed with the Director General of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the involvement of the WTO in the implementation of the second point of the Ukrainian peace formula – “Food security”.
About this reported press service of the Office of the President following the meeting between Okonjo-Iweala and the head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak.
The meeting primarily discussed the protection of free trade, in particular in the Black Sea, which is currently threatened by Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Yermak emphasized that Russia’s purposeful destruction of the transport and agricultural infrastructure of Ukraine and the “blockade” of Ukrainian ports threatens the supply of Ukrainian agricultural products and is aimed at food blackmail. This poses an immediate threat to food security and violates free trade.
Therefore, he offered to consider the possibility of involving the World Trade Organization in the implementation of the second point of the Ukrainian peace formula called “Food security”. According to the head of the OP, the authority of the WTO and its influence on international trade can play an important role in the implementation of this clause.
The parties agreed to make efforts to restore full-fledged exports from Ukraine, strengthen food security in the world, in particular through the humanitarian initiative Grain from Ukraine, strengthen the role of the WTO in restoring peace in Ukraine, as well as overcoming poverty and hunger in the world.
