“3-2-1” – the first data backup in every business starts with this rule

One of the company’s most important assets is its information.

Whether it’s a customer base, or technical documentation, or created applications, or detailed and adjusted logistics. However, due to a hardware failure, a downloaded and launched virus or another unpleasant surprise, it can all be lost. To avoid this, you should create backups. That is, to store 3 copies of information on 2 types of media, of which at least 1 must be in a separate place.

However, at UCloud we use an improved scheme – 3-2-1-1-0. We recommend organizing three copies of critical information, two of which should be placed, for example, in your own data center on different media, where one of them will not be connected to the network. And send the third copy to the cloud. The last part of the rule, “0”, means that no errors should occur when checking the information from the backup.

Often, our clients place one copy in their own data center, another in a data center in Kyiv, and another in one of the data centers in Warsaw or Frankfurt. The data exchange delay between the Kyiv and Warsaw data centers is only 14 milliseconds, from Lviv the delay decreases to 7.5 milliseconds. Customers who order a backup service usually place the main copy of information in our cloud data center in Kyiv. Next, we backup every night to one of the data centers in Warsaw, where the information is stored for 1-2 weeks. And later we place an additional copy in the data center in Frankfurt, where it will remain for a month to six months. We jokingly call it “copy of the last hope”.
