70% of Volgograd residents would not support renaming the city to Stalingrad. This follows from the data of a survey of Volgograd citizens conducted by the independent sociological project Russian Field.
If the authorities decided to call Volgograd Stalingrad, only a quarter of the citizens would approve this decision. Volgograd citizens over 60 would especially support such a renaming: 44% of them want to live in Stalingrad.
Proponents of the renaming believe that this question is now being raised “to remind us of the feat” during World War II, to preserve history, increase patriotism, and attract tourists to the city. Opponents see this as a corrupt goal, the authorities’ desire to instill patriotism and pseudo-patriotism.
At the same time, when asked which city name they like best, 74% of Volgograd residents said Volgograd, 18% – Stalingrad, and 5% – Tsaritsyn.
A similar poll was conducted in January by the state-run VTCIOM. Its results also showed that the majority – 67% – of Volgograd citizens do not support renaming the city to Stalingrad.
