Oleg Orlov, co-chairman of the “Memorial” human rights center, who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment under the article on the so-called discrediting of the army for an anti-military publication, was offered to sign a consent to participate in the so-called special military operation in the Moscow prison. This is how the Russian authorities call the war in Ukraine.

As “Memorial” reports, on March 11, Orlov was transferred to the Moscow SIZO-5 “Vodnyk”. There, he, like the other prisoners, was offered to sign a consent to participate in the war.

“Oleg Petrovych laughingly clarified whether his age does not bother them – this year he turns 71. He was told that nothing bothers him.” – reports “Memorial”, clarifying that Orlov did not agree with the proposal.

The maximum age for serving in the army under contract for those with a rank below general is 65 years. It is not clear on what basis Orlova was offered to participate in “SVO”.

FSIN did not comment on this situation. Previously, it was repeatedly reported that prisoners were being detained in places of deprivation of liberty. Prisoners were previously pardoned by presidential decrees, recently the State Duma passed a law stating that they would be released on parole in case of recruitment. The law on exemption from criminal liability in case of concluding a contract with the Ministry of Defense was also previously adopted.

The case of repeated discrediting of the army against Oleg Orlov was initiated in the spring of 2023. In autumn, he was sentenced to a fine. However, the prosecutor’s office appealed the verdict, and the case was sent for a new trial. On February 27, 2024, the court sentenced Orlov – one of the most famous Russian human rights defenders, co-founder of the “Memorial” society – to 2.5 years in a general regime colony. He did not admit guilt and called the process itself unfair, however, he spoke with the last word, in which he once again sharply condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
