78% of Ukrainian citizens have relatives or friends who died or were injured as a result of the Russian invasion. These are the results of a study conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

According to the survey, 63% of respondents have at least one close relative or friend who died. It is noted that, on average, the respondents know closely at least three people who did not return from the war, and that the respondents’ answers are approximately the same in all regions of Ukraine, from east to west.

The survey was conducted from May 26 to June 5 by the method of telephone interviews based on a random selection of mobile numbers. Thus, sociologists surveyed 2 thousand 13 respondents over 18 years of age. Residents of Crimea, Sevastopol, and certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions did not participate in the study – that is, territories that were not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine until February 24, 2022. Citizens who went abroad after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion were also not interviewed.

  • The Ukrainian authorities, like the Russian authorities, do not announce the exact number of losses of their armies during the war. As for civilians, according to the UN, since the end of February last year, over 9,000 civilians have died in Ukraine, and almost 16,000 have received injuries of various degrees of severity. The organization emphasizes that these are only documented cases, and that the real figures of the dead and injured may be much higher.
